How Do Dentures Work?

Dentures are removable prosthetic devices used to replace teeth and restore smiles. Dentures are made of acrylic. They consist of natural-looking, gum-colored bases that support artificial teeth. Once placed in your mouth, dentures fit over your gums to restore the look and function of your teeth. You will be able to bite, chew, and speak naturally and with confidence.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

The lifespan of your dentures will depend on how well you care for them. On average, dentures can last up to 8 years before they will need to be replaced. They will also need to be relined, rebased, or repaired over time due to normal wear. Be sure to bring your denture in during your regular checkups. Our dentist will assess their condition and recommend repairs as needed

How Do I Care For My Dentures?

Your dentures will need special daily care to keep them fresh, clean, and in good condition. Here is what you need to know:

  • Remove and rinse your dentures after eating. Always use cool water to clean your dentures, as hot water may warp them.
  • Handle your dentures with care. Be sure not to bend or drop them, as they can fracture.
  • Brush your dentures daily to remove plaque
  • Soak your dentures overnight. Use cool water or a mild denture cleaning solution. Keeping your dentures moist helps them retain their shape for a comfortable fit.
  • Schedule regular checkups.

Are Dentures Uncomfortable?

While they take some time to get used to, they are custom-made to fit your mouth. They can feel bulky in your mouth for the first few weeks while you adjust to eating and speaking. In time, they will begin to feel normal and natural.

What Is the Difference Between Partial Dentures and Full Dentures?

Patients have two denture options available to them, depending on the extent of tooth loss: partial dentures or full dentures. Full dentures replace teeth in cases of full-mouth tooth loss. If the patient still has some or most of their natural teeth, Dr. Moon may recommend a partial denture. Sometimes called a removable bridge, a partial denture consists of artificial teeth on a lightweight metal framework. The framework fits over the gums and surrounding teeth to fill the gap left behind by tooth loss.

What are Implant-Supported Dentures?

Patients interested in a stable and permanent tooth loss solution may benefit from implant-supported dentures. Also called fixed dentures, implant-supported dentures use a series of dental implants to anchor the overdenture to the jawbone. This requires a minor surgical procedure to screw the implants into the patient’s jaw.

Unlike removable dentures, implant-supported dentures are the only type of denture that helps restore the bone tissue lost once teeth have been lost or removed. Implants are made from biocompatible titanium and fuse to the natural jawbone, stimulating tissue growth and preserving the shape and health of the jaw. Once the denture has been anchored to the implants, it can be cared for it just like natural teeth with daily brushing and flossing.
